Mary and Bob Hammar moved west with just $150, no jobs, and a lot of tenacity. For Mary and her late husband, this was the start of their American Dream.
Over 20 years they built a medical uniform business, Hammar’s Uniforms, into a thriving nine-store chain. “Hard work and tenacity developed that business,” Mary shared.
Today, Mary brings that same spirit of hard work and warmth to Fieldstone of Bainbridge, proving that while life’s chapters may change, the essence of a vibrant life never fades.
The trek to Washington
Their move to Washington was inspired by Bob as a born and raised Oregonian, convincing Mary that “it was more beautiful than flatland Illinois,” as she recalled.
The couple settled in Tacoma, where they raised four children and launched their business. Mary started out working the warehouse, then when the business moved from cash only to allowing credit, she became their first accounts receivable manager.
Finding home at Fieldstone
Now Mary calls Fieldstone of Bainbridge home as one of its first residents upon opening in July 2023, fully embracing the vibrant community lifestyle. She especially enjoys Fieldstone’s knitting club and flower arranging activities, and the beautiful garden view from her apartment window featuring flowers she planted herself.
Fieldstone was the only senior living community Mary toured, choosing it for its close proximity to her daughter. “All I could say was, this is lovely,” Mary recalled as her first impression while touring the unfinished community.
Mary and Bob settled into their new independent living apartment together, ready to enjoy this new chapter. Only a year later, Mary faced the profound loss of her husband of 67 years. The Fieldstone community became a great source of comfort and connection for Mary during this time. Surrounded by neighbors and staff, Mary has found a supportive environment that helps her feel right at home.
Personalized service in senior living
This supportive atmosphere is created by the staff, who go out of their way to make residents feel seen and valued. Mary is especially grateful for Bill in maintenance, who has been accommodating with her apartment needs, and for Omar in the dining room, who greets her by name. She appreciates the entire dining team for their personalized service and for remembering residents’ favorite meals.
“I’m very happy to be here amongst friendly people,” Mary shared.
For the next generation, Mary offers practical advice: “Save, save, save for retirement! The earlier in their life they can start saving, the happier they’ll be in the end.”
