Taking time to recharge isn&#8217;t selfish\u2014it&#8217;s essential for everyone&#8217;s well-being, including the person you&#8217;re caring for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Respite care can last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks, depending on your needs. It might happen in your loved one&#8217;s home, at an adult day program, or in a residential care facility. The goal is always the same: To give you time to rest, handle personal matters, or simply take a breath while knowing your loved one is in capable hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Caregivers need respite<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The statistics tell a sobering story. Sometimes the immediate needs of a caregiver make respite care necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOftentimes, it happens when family members are dealing with their own pressing health needs or when they cannot provide the level of care their loved one needs at that time,\u201d O\u2019Neal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why is respite care an underused tool for family caregivers? These are some common concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>My loved one will feel abandoned.<\/em><\/strong> Most seniors understand that their caregivers need breaks. Some feel relieved to know they&#8217;re not overburdening you. Think of respite care as something that helps you continue caring for them in the long run, not as a punishment or abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For families wondering if trying out a respite stay will be more trouble than it\u2019s worth, O\u2019Neal has answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe often see that it\u2019s not a factor, they enjoy being here, they get the care that they need, they take part in our <a href=\"https:\/\/fieldstonecommunities.com\/bainbridgeseniorliving\/our-community\/activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activities<\/a> and socialize,\u201d said O\u2019Neal. \u201cWe see a lot of times people enjoy their stay and look forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>I can&#8217;t afford it.<\/em><\/strong> Respite care costs vary widely. Some options, like adult day programs, may be covered by Medicaid, veterans\u2019 benefits, or long-term care insurance. Local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitsap.gov\/hs\/Pages\/Aging-Landing.aspx\/2016-2019_Kitsap_County_Aging_and_Long_Term_Care_Area_Plan_Update_9-14-17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Area Agencies on Aging<\/a> often know about subsidized programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>I feel guilty taking time for myself.<\/em><\/strong> This might be the biggest obstacle. Remember that taking care of yourself isn&#8217;t optional\u2014it&#8217;s a necessary part of sustainable caregiving. Your loved one benefits when you&#8217;re healthy, rested, and emotionally balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neal said the risk of burnout is real, and it\u2019s important for caregivers to take care of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting started with respite care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin by assessing your needs. How often do you need breaks? What activities or tasks are you neglecting because of caregiving? Start small if the idea feels overwhelming. Try a few hours of in-home care or send your loved one to an adult day program for one day. See how it goes for both of you. Most families find that once they experience the benefits, they wish they&#8217;d started sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neal noted that the rules for respite care vary from one community to another, so it\u2019s worth doing your research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe minimum stay is 14-30 days, something to note is a resident who is here for respite care can extend their stay after 30 days but must re-assess by getting the appropriate paperwork from their doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk with your loved one about respite care when they&#8217;re having a good day. Explain that it helps you stay healthy so you can continue caring for them. Involve them in choosing the type of care if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Respite care isn&#8217;t a luxury\u2014it&#8217;s a vital tool for sustainable caregiving. You deserve support. Your loved one deserves a caregiver who isn&#8217;t running on empty. Respite care helps make both of those things possible.
