But with so many details to observe and questions to ask, it&#8217;s easy to feel overwhelmed or miss important red flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are seven practical tips to help you make the most of your tours and find a community where you or your loved one will thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Schedule your tour strategically<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try to visit during mealtimes or when <a href=\"https:\/\/fieldstonecommunities.com\/bainbridgeseniorliving\/our-community\/activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activities<\/a> are in full swing\u2014typically mid-morning or early afternoon. This gives you a genuine sense of daily life, not just an empty hallway tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If possible, schedule tours at different times of day or even different days of the week. A community might feel vibrant on Tuesday afternoon but quiet on Saturday morning. You want to understand the rhythm of life there, not just see it at its most polished moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t announce your visit too far in advance. While scheduled tours are standard, some families also do a \u201cdrop-in\u201d visit later to see if the experience matches. If a community discourages unannounced visits during reasonable hours, that\u2019s a red flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Do they make eye contact, call people by name, and engage warmly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI also want to see staff interacting with other staff, not just the residents,\u201d said Randi O&#8217;Neal, Community Relations Director for Fieldstone of Bainbridge. \u201cI&#8217;ve come to learn that culture within the community can be very positive with the residents, but you want to see staff members together and how they talk to each other in the community. If they have good communication with each other, that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained that the mood within a community\u2019s staff can tell you a lot about the company\u2019s values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf the staff are not happy, that&#8217;s a red flag,\u201d O\u2019Neal said. \u201cIt could mean high turnover and inconsistent care, which can further demoralize the rest of the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the staff-to-resident ratio, especially during meals and peak times. Ask your tour guide directly about typical staffing levels for different shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Ask to see a real room<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tour guides may show you a beautifully staged model apartment. That&#8217;s fine, but ask to see the actual room or apartment type you&#8217;d be moving into. Ask to see rooms in different areas of the building\u2014quality can vary significantly between wings or floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019re in the room, check the basics: Is there enough storage? How&#8217;s the lighting? Is the bathroom safe and accessible? Can you bring your own furniture, personal items, or pets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also tour areas residents use every day: dining rooms, activity spaces, outdoor areas, and therapy rooms, if applicable. These matter just as much as the private living space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s extremely important if you are touring to talk with other residents and their families,\u201d O&#8217;Neal advised. &#8220;If someone&#8217;s daughter is there, have a conversation. Additionally, the family members will see things differently than staff might.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Ask hard questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>How long is the average stay at your facility?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What is your staff tenure like?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What is your biggest challenge in this facility?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When was your last CMS survey and did it report any deficiencies?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>How are your fees structured and what would incur additional costs?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>How often do you hold care conferences?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O&#8217;Neal noted that families often ask what happens if their loved one runs out of money. It\u2019s important for family members to understand how care will be funded and how long that estimated funding will last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do work with long-term care insurance, but not Medicare or Medicaid\u2014it&#8217;s all private pay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Evaluate the dining experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay for a meal. Look at more than just taste. Are there menu choices, or is it one-size-fits-all? Can the kitchen accommodate dietary restrictions, cultural preferences, or simply personal dislikes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/fieldstonecommunities.com\/bainbridgeseniorliving\/our-community\/dining\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dining<\/a> experience itself. Trust your gut<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your intuition is valuable. Sometimes a place checks all the boxes on paper but just doesn&#8217;t feel right\u2014and that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bring someone with you if possible. If you&#8217;re touring for a parent, try to include them in at least one visit so they can share their feelings about the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take photos (with permission) and notes. Documentation helps you remember specific details and compare options fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if in-person tours aren\u2019t an option for you, inquire about a virtual tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have done long-distance tours on a video call,\u201d O\u2019Neal said. \u201cI&#8217;ll send information on whatever they are interested in\u2014just ask and I will. I&#8217;ve sent videos of other residents and their reasons why they have chosen Fieldstone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Touring senior living communities can feel daunting, but going in prepared helps you see past the marketing and understand what daily life is really like.
